The 50 Millionth Voter

At some point on November 3, 2020 an unknown Minnesotan will cast the state’s 50 millionth general election vote for president. Over the previous 40 cycles since 1860, there have been 47,409,575 votes for president cast in the Gopher State, which has consistently boasted one of the highest voter turnout rates in the country in recent decades. Approximately three million residents will vote in the presidential race in 2020 – easily topping the 50 million vote mark (2.94 million Minnesotans voted in the 2016 presidential contest). Minnesota currently has the longest streak backing Democratic presidential nominees outside of the South in U.S. history at 11 consecutive cycles – two more than Missouri.
