For just the third time in more than 650 general and special elections, voters in an Iowa U.S. House race will have six choices on the general election ballot. The state’s 3rd CD finds Republican David Young challenged by Democratic businesswoman Cynthia Axne plus Libertarian Bryan Holder, Green nominee Paul Knupp, independent Joe Grandanette, and Mark Elworth running under the Legal Medical Now banner. It has been over 100 years since the last time six candidates ran for a house seat in Iowa: 1914’s 1st CD race won by Rep. Charles Kennedy also had Democratic, Progressive, Socialist, and Prohibition nominees plus one independent. A February 1914 special election in the 2nd CD won by Democrat Henry Vollmer also had GOP, Progressive, Socialist, and Prohibition nominees and one independent. The state has had five candidates on the ballot in a U.S. House race in 32 elections.
