On Wednesday, Paul Ryan’s 2012 U.S. House challenger Rob Zerban announced he will seek a rematch in 2014 against the failed GOP VP nominee. Should Zerban win his party’s nomination next year, that would mean the Democratic Party will have fielded just five different candidates across the last 10 election cycles in the state’s 1st CD since 1996: Lydia Spottswood (1996, 1998), Jeffrey Thomas (2000, 2002, 2004, 2006), Marge Krupp (2008), John Heckenlively (2010), and Zerban (2012, 2014?). Democrats held the 1st CD in southeastern Wisconsin from 1971 through 1994 when Ryan’s predecessor Mark Neumann won the seat during the Republican Revolution.
