About Open Rivers

Public Scholarship on Water, Place & Community

Open Rivers: Rethinking Water, Place & Community is an open-access digital journal of public scholarship that provides a forum for critical conversations about the interconnections between ecological and social systems. Water is the lens through which we investigate the challenges of climate change, struggles for environmental justice, and the ways we know and relate to the natural world. Open Rivers brings together voices and perspectives of academics, community members, artists, advocates, students, practitioners and professionals who share concern for our water futures.

Featuring the work of engaged thinkers from multiple areas of expertise and experience, Open Rivers creates a space for stories that catalyze creative, multidisciplinary solutions to the profound challenges facing our water systems and our environment more broadly. We augment this approach by using digital media in innovative ways to facilitate new forms of knowledge, communication, and practice.

Submissions

We are happy to accept queries from authors interested in publishing in our journal. If you would like us to consider including your original work as a feature article or a column in a future issue of Open Rivers, please send an email inquiry to openrvrs@umn.edu with a short statement about your background, what you would like to write, and how you see it connecting to the mission of the journal. From there, we’ll discuss with you how we might be able to include your work in a future issue. Please note that we primarily publish new material (rather than previously published work) and we cannot guarantee that we will be able to accept all proposed submissions. For guidelines on the content and general format of journal features and columns, we recommend reading the Submission Guidelines page before submitting your proposal. Thanks for your interest in publishing in Open Rivers.
