Denver’s Amber McReynolds announced last night that she will be leaving that office in mid-August to become executive director of the National Vote at Home Institute and Coalition. Denverite has the story:

Denver Director of Elections Amber McReynolds will be stepping down to serve as an executive director of a voter-based nonprofit pushing for a mail-in ballot election system, Denver Elections announced Thursday.

McReynolds spent seven years in her current role as Director of Elections and 13 years overall with the Office of the Clerk and Recorder, according to Thursday’s release. She’s scheduled to depart the election’s office on August 15 to begin serving as executive director of National Vote at Home Institute and Coalition. The organization advocates for mail-in ballots similar to those currently used in Colorado.

“I have been blessed to lead an incredibly talented and dedicated team at Denver Elections with a focus on improving the voting experience for all Denverites,” McReynolds said in the release. “Serving the city I love in a field that I am deeply passionate about is what has made my time here so special and inspirational.”

In May, McReynolds told Denverite that a run for elected office could be in her future.

During her time at Denver Elections, the office received awards for election administration and innovation.

“Amber played a critical role in modernizing the election model in Colorado along with many efficiencies and innovations for Denver,” Denver Clerk & Recorder Debra Johnson said in the release. “We will miss her and her visionary leadership, and wish her the best of luck in her new endeavor.”

This is a huge loss for for Denver but a huge get for National Vote at Home – and I think is a net-plus for the field because Amber will be able to share her experience more widely on how to transition election systems away from exclusive reliance on neighborhood precincts to a system that is more flexible and convenient for voters and election officials alike.

Congratulations, Amber – looking forward to seeing you even more on the #electiongeek trail! Stay tuned …
