Democrats currently hold 39 U.S. House seats from California – the largest number in party history. Democrats could push that number to over 40 seats from the Golden State after the 2016 election as the party appears on track to hold all of its seats and tries to upend GOP incumbents Jeff Denham (CA-10), David Valadao (CA-21), Steve Knight (CA-25), and Darrell Issa (CA-49). Democrats currently hold 73.6 percent of California’s 53 seats which marks the highest percentage since the party claimed 15 of 20 seats after the 1936 landslide (75.0 percent). The California delegation accounted for 20.7 percent of the 188 Democrats elected to the 114th Congress – the largest percentage in state history and more than double the percentage elected from California after the 1990 cycle (9.7 percent).
